   eMac Now Available for Everyone

When Apple originally released their G4-based eMac, only students, teachers, and educational institutions had access to purchase them. After a flood of e-mails from other customers, Apple is now making the eMac available to everyone.

The new eMac is almost a Snow iMac on steroids. It features a 700MHz G4 processor, a 17” CRT display, an nVidia Geforce2 MX graphics chip, and a CD-RW drive. It includes 128MB of RAM and a 40GB hard drive.

The eMac offers a nice all-in-one package for someone who wants the G4 power that the new iMacs offer without the extra expense of the flat-screen LCD. Please call your MacMedics sales representative for pricing and availability.

    Copy-Protected CD’s and Your Mac

Recently, some of the major music companies began shipping new audio CD’s with a copy-protection scheme that prevents the disc from being read by a computer. These discs have a logo on the case stating, “Will not play on PC/Mac”. If inserted into the CD drive, the user may be unable to eject the CD, and in some cases this can lock up the system.

If you find yourself in this predicament, try some of the following suggestions:

  1. Restart the computer and hold down your mouse button until the CD is ejected.
  2. If OS X is installed on your Mac, restart and boot into OS X by holding down the “X” key. Then open iTunes or DVD Player and click the eject button in either application.
  3. Check to see if your CD/DVD drive has a manual eject hole (a paper-clip sized hole, located on the front of the drive). If so, insert an extended paper clip into the hole to force the CD to eject.

If none of these methods are successful, contact MacMedics to arrange for a service call to remove the CD from your drive.

   The FTC Wants Your Spam

Over the years, e-mail has firmly integrated itself as an everyday portion of the lives of most Americans. Unfortunately, along with the convenience of e-mail has come the scourge of unsolicited messages, or spam.

Recently the FTC began promoting a new campaign to help individuals reclaim their in-boxes. “Almost everyone with an e-mail account gets spam,” said Timothy J. Muris, Chairman of the FTC. “It’s intrusive, unwelcome, and annoying. Deceptive junk e-mail is also illegal. We want to send a message today: we’re going after deceptive spam and the people who send it. We want it off the Net.”

E-mail users can now forward unsolicited commercial e-mails—particularly those involving fraud—to the FTC for further investigation. The address to forward messages to is uce@ftc.gov. The FTC is hoping to protect consumers from the number of various Internet scams. Since starting this program, they have already caught dozens of alleged Web scammers.
