| QuarkXpress 6.0 Arrives! |
Quark Inc. announced yesterday that QuarkXpress 6, the company's flagship product, will ship next week. The long-awaited, industry-standard publishing program features several new enhancements, the most important of which is OSX compatibility.
QuarkXpress 6 features new capabilities like direct PDF export, full-resolution preview, multiple layout sizes and media types in the same project, synchronized text, intuitive Web functionality, and a new window menu that lets you quickly navigate between open files. In addition, the new version is AppleScript-savvy allowing you to connect QuarkXPress to scriptable applications and create an automated workflow.
A new innovation, synchronized text, lets you share a single pool of content across multiple boxes. Update information in one space, and it's updated everywhere. QuarkXPress 6 documents now let you manage your projects in one file, which makes it easier to generate collateral for different formats.
Other productivity enhancements include multiple levels of undo, as well as table and layer improvements. A convenient popup lets you quickly navigate to and from a previous state in the document history. QuarkXPress 6 also lets you undo actions that were previously irreversible, including text and picture import, text linking and style sheet edits.
You can now create smoother blends, manage color at high-end printers and create a print layout space that can output composite color as well as separations. For the web, QuarkXPress offers more control over designing cascading menus, specifying font families for style sheets and creating rollovers.

| Recycling Old Monitors |
As monitors get better and cheaper, sooner or later you are going to find yourself with one or more non-functioning or unwanted ones. Before you start eyeing the dumpster as a possible new home for your old monitors consider the hazards of disposing them in this manner. Your monitors contain a toxic cocktail of elements such as arsenic, mercury, cadmium, beryllium, chromium, nickel, zinc and lead. If your monitor ends up at the landfill these elements will, over time, leach out and contaminate the groundwater. Maybe yours.
Consider e-cycling your monitors (and other computing peripherals which are just as dangerous) in an environmentally responsible manner. As awareness grows some far-sighted manufacturers such as Dell, Viewsonic and Sony have developed recycling programs. Contact them for details. We have compiled a list of resources specific to our local area that you can take advantage of. If you are reading this and your local area is not the same as ours, please contact your local Department of Environmental Services; chances are they already have a program in place.
