| MacMedics is very happy to announce that we have a newly redesigned website up and running. We think you'll find it's full of interesting and helpful information about both MacMedics as well as the Macintosh Community in general.
Look to our special "Feature" pages for some interesting reading. The "Featured Client" provides a real-world case study of the level of service we provide our customers, offering great examples of what we can do for your business. The "Featured Product" page shares our own expertise and insights into a current Macintosh product. And the "Featured Technician" lets you find out more about the men and women of MacMedics who have been serving you for years.
Aside from these special "Features", there's also a great News & Events section, which is a perfect way to read about how MacMedics interacts with the local Macintosh community. In our Newsletter section, you can find past archives of Infosource and an easy way for your friends and colleagues to sign up. On the training page you can read about all the classes we offer and download a registration form to enroll.

| Mac OS X 10.3.3 is Released |
Apple released an update to Mac OS X 10.3 - version 10.3.3 - this week. This update includes many small improvements to the system that our clients with both new and older machines will appreciate. If you haven't already, you can download the update now from your Software Update Preference Pane in the System Preferences. This release contains all the previous component updates for 10.3 , as well as all the current security patches. For older Macs, boot time has been has been cut down, sometimes by as much as half, and system performance in general is now even more responsive. For G5 owners fan noise has been greatly reduced. Network browsing has been improved, and you can once again mount network drives on the desktop. For laptop users, you can now change the settings of the function keys, in the Keyboard and Mouse Preference Pane, from Apple's default settings (brightness, volume, etc.) to those of your choosing. Apple's Mail, Safari, Disk Utility and DVD player have also been updated. As always, we recommend that whenever installing new software that you have your data backed up

| Cleaning the Font Cache |
Have you ever experienced garbled text in Mac OS X? Although OS X doesn't suffer from corrupt fonts like OS 9 did, it's still possible that you may encounter corrupt font cache files. One symptom of a corrupt font cache is garbled fonts, while another symptom happens (if you are using Suitcase X1) when you attempt to activate a typeface and Suitcase throws up a 'System Font Conflict' warning when there is no actual conflict.
The solution is simple...purge the corrupt font cache files. One of our favorite freeware programs that automates this is Mark Douma's Font Cache Cleaner. It will purge corrupt font cache files for both Mac OS X 10.2.x and 10.3.x.
If you are having font-related problems with Adobe or Microsoft applications you may also have an application-specific corrupt font cache file that Font Cache Cleaner doesn't currently handle. In this case, use the Finder to Find the offending font caches. Adobe font caches start with ‘AdobeFnt’ and end with ‘.lst’ while Microsoft uses an ‘Office Font Cache’ file (if you used ATM Deluxe in Mac OS 9, you’ll likely have 10's if not 100's of AdobeFnt files). Select all the cache files in the Search Results windows and press Apple-Delete to move them to the Trash. That should solve your problem!

| Miglia Backup Solution |
If you are not backing up your data, you are flirting with disaster. It's always best to follow the lesson of "It's not a matter of IF my hard drive will fail, it's a matter of WHEN". At some point, all hard drives will fail. It's inevitable. That's why this month's featured product is Miglia's MediaBank HS-R. The MediaBank is a backup solution that gives both piece of mind and expanded storage for clients that simply cannot afford to lose data. MacMedics recommends this solution because of its simplicity. The MediaBank has room for two drive trays with built in hardware support for RAID 1. What this means is that data is mirrored to both hard drives simultaneously. If one hard drive were to fail all of its data would still be instantly available on the second hard drive. Because the MediaBank ships with a third drive tray you can hot swap one drive to an offsite backup facility and insert a new blank drive without skipping a beat. The MediaBank will automatically copy your data from the remaining drive onto the newer drive so that, once again, all of your information is mirrored. The MediaBank connects to your Macintosh through either its Firewire 400 or 800 ports.
