A new 5-Star Review for an iPhone Data Recovery that we performed for just $99:

without comments

A new 5-Star Review for an iPhone Data Recovery that we performed for just $99: “MacMedics is the best, Cody is amazing!!! My phone had water damage, and companies like ScreenSavers wanted $700+ to get my pictures off of it, which I could not afford. I was in tears, and then I drove past MacMedics. Cody recovered all my precious pictures and videos from my baby’s first year, priceless. Thank you to Cody, you have no idea how I thankful I am!!”

A note to anyone reading this: Not all data recoveries have a happy ending. We’ve seen the worst ones, like where photos of a loved one are lost forever. It’s SO easy to backup, so do that today! If you’re an iPhone user, the Apple iCloud backup service for iPhones is only .99 cents a month for 50GB or $2.99 for 250GB (which you can share with your whole family). I’m sure our happy customer would have paid that to protect her data. If you need help setting up a backup, just stop by any MacMedics office for free assistance. That goes for Macs too!

Try to avoid 3rd-party iPhone chargers and cables

without comments

We hear stories of 3rd-party iPhone chargers and adapters going wrong all the time. As you might expect, we usually tell customers to avoid non-Apple adapters and cables and stick with the genuine Apple accessories. Well, last night after my daughter went off to camp with my Apple charger and cable, I started rooting around for another charger to use. I happened across this one from a while ago. It’s not from the Dollar Store, and it’s a decent and reputable brand. Well, as I was watching TV, I started to smell something. It took a couple of minutes for me to figure out what was making the smell. You guessed it, my backup, 3rd-party adapter.

Moral of the story, stick with Apple, and even when using Apple, please monitor your chargers and cable for issues. If you have a frayed or torn cable or a device or cable that has a dark spot or gets hot, please discontinue use of that device and recycle it here at MacMedics.

A Time Machine Backup Hard Drive Makes a Great Mother’s Day Gift

without comments

Happy Mother’s Day! Do you know what makes a great Mother’s Day gift? A Time Machine backup hard drive! If you’re the keeper of the photos, you must have them backed up at all times. The older the computer, the greater the risk of hard drive failure, but ANY hard drive (including Solid State hard drives) can and do fail no matter if they are new OR old. Plus, if you (or your mom) is a laptop user, you also need to consider laptop loss, theft, and damage.

We’ve seen moms AND dads who have experienced a hard drive failure. It’s not a good situation to be in, especially when the photos of their kids are in jeopardy or lost forever. Even if MacMedics can recover the data or it has to be sent out for “clean room” data recovery, there’s the added stress of that, plus the added expense.

A common misconception is that Time Machine requires Apple hardware like a Time Capsule. It does not. All Time Machine needs is an external hard drive that is Macintosh formatted. You might already have a Mac formatted hard drive with data on it. If you do the Time Machine backup file will co-exist with your data as long as there is enough free space. If you don’t have a drive already, MacMedics carries a nice 1TB 2.5″ portable unit with a 2-year warranty for $99.

A new 5-Star Review for MacMedics Severna Park

without comments

A new 5-Star Review for MacMedics: The Apple Authorized service and sales from MacMedics have been a great resource for my business and home Mac networks. Between the office and home, I have at least two dozen Apple devices, several which I’ve taken to MacMedics for help, My experiences here, have been nothing less than first class! My Apple gear is serviced quickly the first time around, a rarity elsewhere, but not with MacMedics! When some items were not able to be repaired practically, I had them replaced at MacMedics. The owner is always on the premises and hands on. I have not been back to the Mall since MacMedics opened!! Thank you.

MacMedics 5-Star Review – “One chef will have to use this malfunctioning laptop as their ONLY HEAT SOURCE!”

without comments

We had to share this recent 5-Star MacMedics review that mentions Alton Brown and Sandy the Shop Cat the shop kat. Enjoy.

“My five-year-old, well-out-of-warranty (but dearly loved) 17” MacBook Pro committed suicide last Thursday evening. It had been behaving perfectly 99.9% of the five years I’ve owned it, then it went glitchy with video and virtually flamed out. It was HOT. Alton Brown could have used it as a heat source for a punishment on “Cutthroat Kitchen” (“One chef will have to use this malfunctioning laptop as their ONLY HEAT SOURCE…”). There was a sizzling-snap noise and it was dead. I have a lot of IT experience and have built and rebuilt countless Windows PCs and laptops. While I suspected the logic board (what everyone else calls a system board or motherboard), I wasn’t sure.

I don’t *want* a new laptop. So I logged in to make an appointment at the Apple Store for a repair quote. While I expected it to be traumatic, I didn’t expect the first trauma to be trying to simply get an appointment. The first available option was five days out! How could I survive in limbo for five days? Then I noticed that there are several Apple-annointed independent computer repair options in the area! SAVED!

Honestly, I chose MacMedics partly for the quickly-available appointment and partly because they have a store cat. The store cat is most excellent and fluffy, by the way. If you go there, give the kitty gentle head scritches but not back pets.

ANYHOW, the laptop died Thursday night and I took it to them Friday at lunchtime. It took about 2 minutes for them to inform me that the logic board had been fried by the failure of the video chip, that it’s an $800 part, and *that there is an extended warranty that covers the issue until the end of this calendar year!* They were able to bill the entire repair to Apple. So having my laptop attempt self-immolation is aggravating, but timing is everything.

MacMedics ordered the part immediately, and let me know that they couldn’t predict how long it would take to arrive. They did inform me of the updates I would receive by email. Off I went to be limited to an iPad over the weekend and possibly for longer. Well, on Monday (literally the next business day) I got a lunchtime email letting me know that the repair was complete. Top notch service!

As a side note, they inquired about my data backup solution without being pushy-selly about it (which is good, as I had that covered), and made a couple of security observations that were helpful and appropriate.

All-in-all, MacMedics is a good alternative to the Apple Store. Especially since the Apple Store is completely lacking in resident cats.”

Today, another computer repair shop came to visit MacMedics. They were trying to fix a MacBook Air and came to see us to try to buy an Apple hard drive service part.

We certainly respect other places trying to help their customers, but these folks are just not equipped to fix Apple gear without the Apple tools, training, and certifications that we have here at MacMedics.

The representative that visited us grabbed the Apple SSD hard drive (just a small memory card the size of a stick of gum) out of their bag, and said while handing it to me with their bare hands (without the necessary static bag protection), “I need one of these”. I promptly suggested that we go ahead and put it in a static bag for them.

They were convinced that was the issue with the computer was in fact a faulty SSD hard drive. I explained that SSD hard drives rarely go bad, and the best way for us to help them would be to have the whole MacBook Air. That way, we could perform a free test on the computer with the SSD hard drive installed back into the unit. They did not bring the MacBook Air with them for today’s visit.

If you have a Macintosh computer, or any other Apple gear like an iPad, iPod, iPhone, Apple Watch, or Apple TV, there’s really no reason not come visit MacMedics first. We’re the only Apple Authorized Premium Service Provider in the Baltimore-DC region. Our Apple diagnostic test of your gear is free and requires no appointment. Plus, all current Apple Macs are repaired with genuine Apple Service parts and ALL paid-for repairs come with the famous 1-Year MacMedics warranty.
