My 30-second elevator pitch has evolved to include ATM repairs.

So someone in the elevator will see my MacMedics jacket, shirt, or tool bag and asks, “What exactly is MacMedics?”

I say, “MacMedics is an Apple Authorized Macintosh service and consulting business. We service and maintain Macs at ad agencies and other places where pre-press and graphic design happens like corporate graphics or marketing departments. We like to say we’re in the ATM repair business, because when your Mac is broken or slow, you’re not making money.”

I got a huge dose of this wisdom this recently. A guy who lives and works near our shop has a video production business. He’s been asking about maybe getting a new Mac for the last year or so.

We exchange e-mails every so often when he has a question about his Mac or to ask if we need any video production help. I saw him at Subway not too long ago and he let me know that he might be getting a new Mac soon.

He came into the shop with his older MacBook Pro that was really sick. He had tried to run a Firmware update while he was in the middle of a project and it failed, thus making the unit inoperable. It’s not a common occurrence, but we do see it from time to time. As soon as it happened he ordered a new MacBook Pro from somewhere else, and then brought that in so we could transfer his data from the old unit to the new unit. Sadly, we could have saved him even more time if he had purchased the new Mac from MacMedics.

Normally this is not a big deal. We set it up the new MacBook Pro to migrate and it failed about 75% of the way thru. We tried a few other things and tried again, and it failed a second time. We then began to suspect the drive might be failing as it was getting kind of noisy and it was getting pretty hot as well.

I decided to go ahead and clone the drive on our data recovery equipment, so I could copy the data off the drive quickly. I then had to fix that data in order to get it into to shape to migrate it. His hard drive was a huge mess. The report on the drive was seven pages long. The total process ended up taking several hours and it delayed him over 24 hours from the point where his old unit blew up.

So, he’s a professional guy who makes his living with this MacBook Pro, and he had no back up, and he’s never had the unit serviced or looked at. This MacBook Pro is really his ATM cash machine as it provides him with all of his bread and butter for his business.

This is a fantastic case study in why a little preventive maintenance goes along way. If you treat your Mac like your very own ATM machine, you’ll never have these problems. Let’s get real here? Are you going to let your ATM degrade to a point where it stops dispensing cash.

1.	This unit is well over two years old, so if we had seen it at any point recently, we would have replaced the hard drive and serviced the unit.

2.	If this client had ever consulted with us at all, we would have made sure he had a back up system in place.

3.	Our clients who follow us on Facebook, Twitter, and our e-mail newsletter all know never to run an update to fix a problem, and never to run one while on deadline.

4.	A little bit of annual maintenance and an automatic and tested back up system pay for themselves very quickly.

We’re friendly with this fellow, so if had stopped and called us on the phone, we would have been able to tell him all of this. We love to talk shop. If you have a question, just pick up the phone and give us a call!

We also do so for many of our own customers whom have purchased their Apple gear from MacMedics.

Over the last six months or so, our Apple service business has basically doubled. The Apple Stores in the area are so overwhelmed; many Apple owners are finding out that there is an alternative to making an appointment or waiting around in the mall for a face-to-face with a Genius at the Genius Bar. See our recently updated Blog post on why it makes sense to come visit MacMedics in either Lanham (1 mile from I-495 at RT 50) or Millersville (5 minutes from BWI Airport or 10 minutes form the Annapolis Mall)

When we perform an Apple Warranty or AppleCare repair for someone, Apple sends them a survey to ask how well we performed the service on Apple’s behalf.

Apple then forwards these remarks and the accompanying scores to us with the idea that they will help improve our service.

In the latest round feedback from Apple, these anonymous comments praise MacMedics in such a level of detail it almost looks like we wrote them ourselves.

These are direct from Apple, and we’d like to thank our loyal customers for supporting us. THANKS!

-Very customer focused.

-The service was the best I have ever had on any product. Thanks!

-Technician was helpful and provided additional information on a completely unrelated topic. It was a very good experience.

-My experience with Mac Medics was amazing. I felt at ease leaving my MacBook in their hands.

-Just want to say that Mac Medics offers the best quality service for your products

-They were fantastic the service was quick the people were friendly and willing to answer all of my questions

-I was extremely satisfied with the expertise and professionalism of Mac Medics I will not hesitate to use them in the future and I have already highly recommended them to my co workers for all of their Mac needs.

-I could not be more happy with the combined service of Apple and Mac Medics. Mac Medics had it couriered to their location and I had it back on Tuesday after the Holiday. I mean serious who works this fast? While the rest of the country enjoyed their 3-day weekend somebody was working on my problem. My satisfaction is off of the charts and I have told many peers and coworkers this amazing story. Thanks again!!!!

-They went above and beyond what was required of them. Very professional and thorough.

“I’ve been dealing with Dana and his crew for over 10 years. All of my experiences have been excellent. I recently purchased another computer from them. Not only did they take time to determine exactly what applications and functionality I required, but went out of their way to assure I DID NOT purchase programming I did not require…thus saving me a considerable sum. When it comes to Mac…these are the only people I will deal with. Courteous, patient, informative, knowledgeable and honest…I couldn’t ask for better service‎”

We have many clients who have been coming to us for years. This client bought a G3 iMac from us over ten years ago for $1200, he ended up replacing it with a 21.5″ Intel iMac for $1199. I think he got his money’s worth out of the G3! The G3 iMac died, so he brought that by for us to recycle for him.

He sent us this nice note to thank us.

“Hey this is the One and Only, DJ PHAZE from Baltimore. Let me tell you a quick thing or two about the folks at MacMedics… As a Serato DJ my MacBooks are the heart of my operation. Without them… um how about we not even finish that sentence?

I’ve had few mishaps with my MacBooks, which required the professional attention by an Authorized Apple Service Provider. I’m constantly using my MacBook for gigs or recording, so a day without my “Purple Rain” (Name of MacBook) amounts to a major loss all around. Add to that my impatience and you got a fazed out PHAZE. Because of my impatience I prefer to not deal with the Apple Store experience (shouts to the Geniuses). Thankfully MacMedics has a great team who attends to my impromptu issues with expedience and understanding. Just before my departure for an out of town gig, I had water spilled into my MacBook recently and fearing the absolute worst, I woefully took “Purple Rain” to MacMedics’ “Shock Trauma” Center in Millersville, MD. The Medics too were expecting a grim outlook as the checked my MacBook in, but optimistically took on the task of complete disassembly and diagnosis.

They charged a small fee of $99 to assess the damage and even offered a loaner Mac at a flat rate for the duration of the repair! Not only was my computer being worked on, I also was able to continue business as usual! Turn around time was short considering MacMedics’ complete disassembly of my unit for thorough drying and diagnostics. They actually got the job 24hrs before the estimated date quoted (yeah, I was counting the hrs.). The Medics took the time to explain everything they did to treat my sick MacBook and showed genuine sensitivity to my plight.

It was practically Christmas all over again in April when I got the call that my “Purple Rain” was working after near death by drowning. This was the second save by MacMedics. I definitely trust the Medics with any of my Mac needs. Not only do they service Apple products, but also they are an Authorized Apple Reseller complete with most of the accessories you may need. So if you need the ER treatment for your sick Apple, MacMedics is the only way to go in DMV area. BTW, they also make house calls!

Thank you to Matt, Tinika, and Dana for taking care of my MacBook woes. “

For information on the security content of this update, please visit: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1222.

Running a software update from Apple (or elsewhere) as soon as it pops up is not always the best plan. In our travels we very frequently see clients who have run a software update without planning ahead for it, and as a result end up with annoying issues, sudden incompatibilities, and even data loss. One thing to consider is how healthy your hard drive is overall before running an update. Never try to solve an issue such as system lock ups or crashing by installing the latest update, as symptoms like those can be exasperated by applying a software update.

Here’s our safety checklist for running software updates or installing a system upgrade.

1. Back up your data, and double check your back up before installing any update. [Don't forget to unplug that back-up before installing an update]

2. Repair permissions – It’s not going to hurt anything, so a quick permission repair is always a good idea.

3. Disconnect any USB or FireWire hard drives, devices, or hubs.

4. Make sure you have enough free space on your hard drive – A safe bet is to have 10% of your total hard drive free.

5. Quit all applications while running software updates. The updates should be the only process running.

6. Consider the possibility that major applications and/or features might be affected by an Apple software update or system upgrade.

Don’t run a software update on a production machine while on a deadline. You want to be certain that the update will not cause more problems than it was designed to fix. If your machine is working, let it continue working as is, and plan to install the update after you know it’s not going to cause any issues for you.

We install the updates on our test machines here at MacMedics as soon as they are released to Apple Developers, and again when they are released to the public. Let us be the guinea pigs. We’ll let you know how we feel about the update in our weekly e-mail to MacMedics clients.

Can your hard drive handle Snow Leopard (or the latest major update)???

Installing a new OS is like taking your hard drive to the gym. It can be quite a workout for an older hard drive, and whenever a new OS comes out, we always see a few dead hard drives as a result. No matter what you do, make sure you have a back up of your data before you begin!

Prices have dropped significantly on hard drives over the last year or so. MacMedics now recommends retiring hard drives after three years in desktops, and two years in laptops. Be sure to check out our web page to find out why you should retire your older hard drive and to learn about our 5 rules of data protection and preservation. Why take a chance with your data when faster, larger, and generally more reliable drives are available. Moving to Snow Leopard is a great opportunity to get a new drive, while at the same time insuring your data is safe.

As I prepared to work outside today, I figured I’d grab a few Podcasts I was behind in, and sync them to my iPhone.

It’s been awhile since I’ve listened to a few of them so I had to tell iTunes to download the latest episodes. It took me a second to remember how to tell iTunes to start downloading them again.

In order to trigger iTunes to give you this option, you have to click on the little round “Exclamation Mark” in the “Status Column”.

And Is Your iPhone Playing Your Podcast Too Fast?

So a grabbed the episodes that I wanted to hear and prepared to head outside to work in the yard. I clicked on the first episode, and it was playing a double the speed. I figured there must be a setting for this, and there is. It’s a new feature in iPhone 3.0 and it’s displayed in the “Scrubber Bar” which allows you to skip to any point in your Podcast. The control for the playback speed is all the way to the right and in direct sunlight I could not see it outside.

I looked on the Internet to see if this was a common settings issue or not. I did a quick search and found Apple’s guide for the playback controls on the iPhone website.

“These folks are great! MacMedics’ experts don’t sleep until they solve your Macintosh problems (not that there are a ton of Mac problems)! So, if you wannabe a Mac user, or are already are, frankly, you can’t go wrong by relying on the experts, their cheerful advice, and dogged determination to excel at MacMedics!
