A letter from Craig Hirai / Amy Wooden of macUpgrades:

Dear Former macUpgrades Customer,

We are pleased to let you know that MacMedics, in Lanham, Maryland, has purchased all the assets of macUpgrades. Dana Stibolt, President, and Kory Barrett, Vice President, have been a real pleasure to work with, as we have completed this rather complicated transaction. Their professionalism and competence have been most refreshing. We would encourage you, your friends and neighbors, and your business to work with MacMedics as you would have worked with macUpgrades.

Thank you, again, for all your support over the years. We hope you will give MacMedics the same loyal support.

Kindest regards,

Craig Hirai and Amy Wooden

macUpgrades of Bethesda, Maryland, a long-time Apple Authorized Specialist lost their lease, and sadly they have closed their doors after supporting the Bethesda and Washington DC area’s Macintosh community for more than 20-years. In an effort to continue and preserve their long standing legacy of Apple service and repair and to provide outstanding support to their long-time clientele, we enthusiastically welcome former macUpgrades clients to MacMedics!

macUpgrades has endorsed MacMedics as their recommended Macintosh sales and service provider. We are proud to have earned their endorsement and pledge to do our very best to provide previous macUpgrades customers with the high level of support that MacMedics and macUpgrades are both famous for.

Like MacMedics, macUpgrades had been serving the area’s Macintosh community for more than 20-years. We hope to be able to continue their tradition of outstanding support to Apple customers no matter where they are located. MacMedics is both an Apple Authorized Service Provider, and an Apple Authorized Value Added Reseller, so MacMedics is a logical and natural fit for long-time Macintosh clients who have been serviced over the years by macUpgrades.

As was the case with macUpgrades, MacMedics is Apple Authorized to resell the entire Apple line of products. That means that MacMedics can supply Apple Macintosh computers, Apple iPads, Apple iPods, and the Apple TV. The only item not available from Apple Specialists or Apple Authorized Resellers is the Apple iPhone. That item must be purchased from Apple, AT&T, Verizon and a small handful of other retailers like Radio Shack and WalMart.

Our clients tell us that the number one reason that people come visit MacMedics for Mac service vs. The Apple Store is that no appointments are ever required to receive expert Mac repair. Also we offer 24-hour warranty repair (for most warranty repairs), Low cost rental computers (if needed), 1-year parts and labor warranty on all out-of-warranty repairs (The Apple Store only offers a 90-day warranty), Hard Drive upgrades (The Apple Store will only replace your drive with the same size), Advanced Macintosh Data Recovery, and we repair all Apple computers right here in our shop. We do not ship units out for “Depot Repair” as is the practice for many cases at The Apple Store. Plus, we offer a VIP repair program for Walk-In service that blows the doors off of Apple’s One-To-One, Joint Venture, or even AppleCare. Our VIP repair program can cover your future repairs for as little as $99 (Mac Pros and MacBook Pros are $149).

Apple Updates MacBook Pro Family

The MacBook Pro family has been updated with next-generation processors and graphics, high-speed Thunderbolt I/O technology, and a new FaceTime HD camera. It delivers unprecedented performance in a patented aluminum unibody design that is as thin and light as ever.

Key features:

-Dual-core and quad-core processors—The latest Intel Core i5 and i7 dual-core and quad-core processors provide up to twice the performance compared to previous generations.

-High-performance graphics—Integrated Intel HD Graphics 3000 are part of every MacBook Pro model. 15- and 17-inch models also include AMD Radeon HD graphics and up to 1GB of video memory, delivering up to three times the performance over previous MacBook Pro models.

-Thunderbolt port—This groundbreaking I/O technology allows you to connect up to six high-speed peripherals, including a high-resolution display.

-FaceTime HD camera—Make widescreen video calls with three times the resolution of the previous MacBook Pro camera. The FaceTime for Mac App comes on all new MacBook Pro models and is also available for Intel-based Macs from the Mac App Store.

If you’ve been waiting for the new MacBook to hit the streets, MacMedics will gladly take your old MacBook (working or not) in trade for a new one. In fact, MacMedics will accept any Intel based Macintosh as a trade in. Even if you’ve got a major issue, liquid damage, or a cracked LCD, we’ll still consider it. Don’t forget that the longer your “dead” or unused Mac sits the less it’s worth. We can also accept broken iPhones and sometime even iPods as well in trade. Don’t let your old stuff sit around and lose value.

Did The Apple Store Tell You Your Mac Is Obsolete And They Can’t Help You? That’ll Never Happen Here At MacMedics

without comments

The Apple Store won’t help with older Apple units, MacMedics CAN! In the case mentioned below by our new customer George, we were ready to take care of his PowerBook G4 when the Apple Store turned him away. In the end he opted for a MacMedics reconditioned MacBook Pro with a 1-year year warranty. So all things considered, we did what we LOVE to do! We took care of someone that needed our services, and we were able to do it for a great price which makes both our customers AND us very happy. Check out George’s review of MacMedics from Yelp below:

My name is George and my Mac G4 17″ laptop died on Saturday (02/19/11). I took it to the Apple Store in Columbia Mall on Sunday and after their diagnostic service, they indicated that they could not either determine the problem or repair my laptop because it was obsolete. However, the best thing that they did do was to was recommend MacMedics, to me. On Monday, I called MacMedics and they asked me if I could bring my laptop in that day. Within two hours they had provided me a quote to repair my unit, but they recommended that I should replace it, if possible. Because of the used and reconditioned units that MacMedics has in stock, I was able to upgrade to a MacBook Pro – 17″ within the timeframe and at a price that was within my budget. On Tuesday (02/22/11) MacMedics (Matthew) had that unit ready for pick up with all of my data transferred from my old laptop and ready for use.

Great response, great service and great price.”

Thanks,
George F.

MacMedics Is The Only Apple Authorized Service Provider In Prince George’s County, Maryland

without comments

MacMedics is the ONLY Apple Authorized Service Provider and the only independent Apple Authorized Value Added Reseller In Prince George’s County, Maryland. MacMedics’ office in Lanham is also one of the closest Apple Authorized Service Providers to the Annapolis Apple Store. (The other being the MacMedics office in Millersville, MD.) So if you’ve got a tough Macintosh repair problem that the Apple Store could not solve, then we are one of the closest places to come get a second opinion.

(The only other Apple Reseller in PG county, other than MacMedics is Best Buy in College Park, MD.)

If you need Macintosh help, training, Apple Authorized Service, or Apple Authorized Sales assistance without the hassle of:

A. Getting to the mall.

B. Finding a parking spot.

C. Lugging your Mac desktop (if you don’t have a laptop) and walking all the way thru the mall.

D. Trying to first get an appointment with an Apple Genius, and then not really getting enough time to really pick their brains for expert Macintosh advice.

It’s also important to know that the Apple Store does not perform data recovery. If you think your data is at risk, setting up your computer on the Genius Bar to copy your data, is not a good idea. As hard drives fail, they generate heat, and as the generate heat they fail more. We’ll remove the drive from your computer and put it right on our data recovery equipment to try and rescue your data. Our fee for this type of recovery is only $199. Read more here.

(Plus as an added bonus ALL Macintosh laptop repairs are performed locally right here in or shop. The Apple Store will often send your laptop away for Apple Depot Service)

Our expert Apple Certified employees stand ready to help at anytime. We are super proud to be an award-winning Apple Authorized Service Provider and Authorized Apple Reseller AND Certified Members of the Apple Consultants Network (and MacMedics is the ONLY ACN member located in Prince Georges County, Maryand. We’re a great alternative to either buying a new Mac or bringing a sick Mac computer to the Mall. MacMedics is also a multiple repeat winner of Apple’s “Commitment To Excellence Award”. In fact, we’re the only Apple Authorized Service Provider In Anne Arundel or Prince Georges counties to win this award according to Apple. This award recognizes us for several things, but most importantly for accuracy and speed of Macintosh repairs. There’s a reason that MacMedics is the most frequently referred service firm for tough Mac service cases, like LCD replacements, liquid damage, vintage or obsolete Mac equipment, and Macintosh data recovery. With well over 50,000 in-lab and on-site service cases and our staff’s combined Mac experience of over 200 years, MacMedics IS the place to bring your sick Mac!

We also perform Hard Drive Upgrades (under warranty or not) and expert Macintosh Data Recovery, two things you simply can’t get at ANY Apple Store. Plus, if you do need a new hard drive, we can upgrade the size, speed, and you get a 3-year warranty, compared to like-for-like hard drive swap at the Apple Store, plus there you only get a 90 day warranty.

Come visit either of our TWO fully-staffed and stocked Macintosh Service & Sales locations in Lanham, MD (1 Mile from I-495/I-95 just inside the Beltway of off Rt 50 and Martin Luther King Hwy.) or in Millersville, MD (near BWI Airport 1/10 of a mile from I-97).

We stock all of the most common Apple, computers, iPads, iPods, and Apple accessories, like MacBook & MacBook Pro batteries, G4 and MagSafe power adapters, back up hard drives, and FireWire & USB cables. Also, in comparison to the Apple Store, our Apple Warranty and AppleCare service is the fastest. Most Apple warranty repairs are generally complete within 24 hours. With our Lanham office being 1 minute from RT 50, it’s super easy to get to us and drop off your repairs quickly. Pull up right at our office door and you can be inside in 10 steps.

Got a problem? Wanna’ talk about it? Just pick up the phone and call your nearest MacMedics office. It’s unlikely that you can get anyone at the Apple Store on the phone, and most other places just send you to voicemail. You will only get voicemail here if everysing phone line we have is tied up (and that does happen).

MacMedics has been in business and fixing Macs all over town since before the Apple Store or anyone else. We are very proud to have just celebrated our 21st anniversary servicing the Baltimore, Annapolis, and Washington DC areas.

One other great thing about coming to visit us, is the fact that parking is here is not an issue, and it’s free and 10 easy steps right into our office. So, avoid the time consuming search for parking when you’re trying to find someplace to park the Mall.

MacMedics Case File: We Save Yet Another Dissertation Off Of A MacBook Pro With A Drinking Problem

without comments

I showed up at MacMedics with the worst case scenario – years of (yet to be published) dissertation data on my MacBook Pro, which I had not dutifully backed up recently enough, and my hard drive was swimming due to a spilled drink into the keyboard. Within 4 days, MacMedics saved my computer, all of my data, and replaced my hard drive. I have learned my lesson and am backing up my data as I type! MacMedics was amazing, keeping me informed on a daily, if not twice daily basis, and saved my data and MacBook. I would go NOWHERE else for any Apple services!

More Appreciation For MacMedics Award Winning Macintosh Service

without comments

We’ve helped Dr. Brooks with a number of Mac service issues over the years. He was kind enough to send us this note last week. You can also read this over on the MacMedics Testimonials web page.

Thursday, 23 December 2010

I just want to express my appreciation for your stellar work over the years. I have been a Mac user professionally for about 15 years now, and during that time, have had more than one emergency, not to mention, requirements for upgrades and servicing.

I have used services in Europe and Asia, in addition to Apple’s own servicing centre in the USA, yet Mac Medics is my preferred site for servicing and repair for several reasons.

First is the personal touch. I come in, I am greeted by name, my records are there, and irrespective of the nature of the visit, am always made to feel that my needs matter; whether the job is for my work or my kid’s iPod.

Second is the depth of knowledge of the team. More than once, I have requested something specifically, only to have the Mac Medics team suggest something that turned out to be a better option, and often less expensive. When I have gone out and sought a second opinion, I have invariably found that the advice was exactly right.

Third is the straightforwardness and transparency of the work. When I drop off my machine, I get a call back that lays out the findings, the options, the cost and the estimated time to completion, and that is exactly what transpires; no hidden costs at pick up time.

Fourth is the thoroughness of the work. In 2008, my 17” MBP’s motherboard died. I received a call back on the repair work, and a Mac Medics staff member asked if the machine had been exposed to smoke, as this might be related to its current status. I had forgot that about 18 months prior, I had had one of the infamous Sony exploding batteries, and there was smoke associated with the event. Mac Medics suggested that, although they could do the necessary repair, I should talk to Apple, which I did and they (Apple) effectively replaced the entire machine (except the keyboard). Mac Medics’ approach demonstrated both thoroughness and integrity.

Then, there is the speed. The rate limiting step to any job I have requested is getting a part onsite. The turnaround time for even the most difficult jobs is brisk, which underscores that my time is valuable as well.

More than anything else, however, is trust. I appreciate that Mac Medics is authorised to service Apple products, stands by their work, and will re-service a job if it remains under warranty.

I highly recommend Mac Medics for both professional and consumer servicing needs.

MacMedics Recommends LoJack For Laptops

with one comment

If you own an Apple MacBook or MacBook Pro we highly recommend LoJack for Laptops be installed on your computer. Also, LoJack can be installed on desktop Macintosh computers as well. Macs are magnets for thieves, so having them protected is a must! When planning for this thing, don’t forget about your backup. Yes computers can be replaced, but your valuable data cannot. If a crackhead looking for quick cash breaks into your place, they will most likely steal your computer and the backup drive that sits next to it. This is a very good reason to also have a “clone” back up hidden in your house, in your safe deposit box, or use an online back up service like Mozy or CrashPlan Pro.

Plus, there are documented stories of Mac users that have had their gear stolen, and used their on-line back up to track down the thief. While the thief is deleting the owns data off the computer he or she is most likely adding their own data. Thieves often don’t know how to work a Mac, so instead of creating a new account, they will just use the existing accounts on the computer. This is a good reason to have an unlocked “Guest” account on the computer. They will add their photos to iPhoto, use iTunes, and nobody can resist using Photo Booth. Also, with Apple Remote Desktop or Back To My Mac, you might be able to monitor your Mac remotely to learn where it is and who has it.

We have had a number of clients who have had their Apple laptops lost to theft this year. This upsets us, so we want to ensure we’re doing all we can to protect your property and your DATA! See our Blog post that lists the serial numbers of Macs and the area they were stolen from here.

We’ve chosen to use LoJack for Laptops for ALL of the MacBooks that are owned by MacMedics. It works well and once it’s installed it’s can’t be removed or detected by the thief who has the laptop.

LoJack for laptops provides theft recovery and remote delete services to protect your sensitive business data. If your laptop were to be lost to theft, you have the ability to track the thief via geo location or IP address reporting, and most likely have your equipment recovered. In situations where your laptop has sensitive data stored on it, you would also have the ability to erase your data remotely, “freeze” your computer, and even have a message displayed announcing the unit has been stolen.

If and when your Apple laptop is stolen, you activate the hidden LoJack software. Once your computer has been reported missing the LoJack team will work will law enforcement to recover your computer. Unlike most other recovery software, LoJack is not a DIY recovery.

It’s also very important to note, that your personal or business data is at a greater risk when it’s stored on a laptop. If your laptop is lost, stolen, or damaged, you could lose your data. It’s extra important that you have a tested and working back up of your data. If you need help setting up a back up for your MacBook, MacMedics has solutions starting at $89.

Contact MacMedics if you have any questions, need to purchase LoJack for Laptops, or need assistance with installing, configuring and testing your backup solution.

Learn more about LoJack for Laptops here: www.macmedics.com/lojack

LoJack for Laptops in the news: LoJack helped recover some computers that had been reported stolen from the Charles County Public School system. Both computers were recovered by using computer keystroke tracking was used to discover the identity of the alleged thief. Read more here.

Update 6/4/11: Since the Mac tracking software “Hidden” has been in the news recently, lots of Mac users have been researching laptop tracking software. LoJack offers some features that Hidden does not, one of them being that you can securely “erase” or “lockup” your computer with LoJack. LoJack does not make pictures available to you and I’m not sure if they even use them or not. This is one of the reasons that it might be wise to have two programs installed. One that you can monitor and LoJack to have professional recovery team do their work from the other side.

Here’s the link to the story that was in the news recently.

More Praise For MacMedics’ Famous “Best In Baltimore” Macintosh And iPod Service

without comments

We’d like to thank two of our clients for the reviews they posted for MacMedics recently:

Impeccable service! Knowledgeable staff! Informative web-site. They took very good care of me. My iPod Classic would not recognize any power source and would not charge. I dropped my iPod off at the Millersville facility on a Monday afternoon. The check-in process was efficient and the staff friendly. I explained the problem to the technician and after brief examination she informed me that the charging connector looked damaged which required replacing the logic board. She then explained the service process, gave me price quotes (which were very resonable) and sited a 24 hour turn-around. They offer the choice of being contacted by phone or email. The next day a technician (Reese) followed up as promised and went over the results of the diagnostics. As it turned out, my hard drive was also damaged and I needed data recovery. All said and done, it wasn’t feasible to undergo the repairs. Reese pointed me to a refurbished unit with similar specs as mine for less than what I’d have paid to repair and recover my data. I’m impressed and very pleased with MacMedics. One thing to note: they only do out of warranty iPod service. This is noted on the Check-in Form. I will always use them for my Apple repairs and I highly recommend them.

And

I was sold on MacMedics years ago when I called to ask about service and got 10 minutes of spot-on technical support, at no charge, from Dana (the owner) which solved my problem over the phone. In response to my incredulity he said simply that that’s his business model – support people with competence and you’ll earn their respect/business when they need you. This past week I had my 3rd experience bringing a Mac in for service. They diagnosed a tricky hardware problem quickly and accurately, leaving me phone messages every step of the way keeping me apprised of progress. When I picked up the repaired machine, Dana asked me a few questions about how I used it and offered several suggestions for how to keep it running more smoothly, ways to be more skillful about backups, etc. Like the previous reviewer, I’ll never take my computer anywhere else for service/repair.
