Brought in a MacBook Pro and had the hard drive replaced and all data transferred. Two weeks later the track pad went crazy. I was on vacation and emailed Dana and he answered back immediately. When I returned home, I took the computer back and after consulting with Chris, decided to purchase a new MacBook Air. I was refunded the cost of the newly replaced hard drive and given a fair trade-in discount for my old computer. Great guys to work with and I recommend them highly for the personal service they provide. The only place I will ever go for any Mac products.

I brought my wife’s 2011 MacBook Air into the MacMedics Baltimore office yesterday to see if they could help remove some cruft from her machine’s hard drive. I was having some trouble removing all of the adware. Jeff met us at the door and in no time had downloaded an adware removal tool onto her hard drive, removed the adware, a boatload of movies and other items our daughter had placed on the machine and got the machine back to its former speed. Thanks Mac Medics, especially Mike, for the excellent job of migrating the data and applications from my old Mac Pro to the new one. Could have had the migrating done cheaper at the local Apple Store but wanted to go with a trusted and reliable source for my data transfer. This is the second time I’ve used Mac Medics, and it was well worth the cost and saving my time. Also, Mac Medics is always there to respond to my questions with sound advice.

Two thumbs up! When my MacBookPro began making ominous grinding noises during my travels I feared the worst, and set out to buy a new one – a cost I could ill-afford… Apple doesn’t repair laptops more than 5 yes old, so the store in Baltimore helpfully suggested that I consult with a good ‘repair shop’ before buying and gave me short list of reputable service providers to chose from. Two places in town could have helped but the turn around was more than a week – too late for my next flight. However, MacMedics assured me a 24 to 48 turn around, well worth the longish drive to Severna Park. Their service speaks for itself: – professional welcome and diagnostic on the spot, within a few minutes of my arrival I understood the problem (fan was shot); – Recommended replacement of fan, hard drive (to solid state for best performance). – They called the next morning (less than 24 hrs) for pick up; – They had done what they promised, ensured that nothing was lost from my old hard drive, completely updated the operating system, answered all my somewhat anxious questions and replaced – as a courtesy – rubber tabs under the laptop for which I knew Apple charged about $10 a pop. So, the laptop is working very well, the mechanics have been cleaned and renewed, the operating system has been updated, and I saved over $1,000. What’s not to like?

I can’t tell you how wonderful MacMedics has been! I am a photographer who has used Apple products for years. I end up taking hundreds of GB worth of photos and am very hard on my computer when it comes to editing and storing all of them. My Mac was a few years old and I wanted to upgrade my RAM and hard drive space. After speaking to MacMedics they helped me find the best solution- I ended up installing extra RAM, getting a solid state hard drive for my operating system, and getting separate hard drives to help store all of my photos. They fixed everything efficiently and were really patient and thorough when answering all of my questions! When I later had some issues with my disk permissions, they were able to walk me through what I needed to do to fix these and the problem was solved. Many people have no idea where to turn for Apple services, sales, or data recovery, so they just end up going to the Apple Store and paying too much for it, not getting an accurate diagnosis, or going elsewhere and ending up with terrible service. But that is not the case with MacMedics- they are great on all accounts. They also give you a 1 year warranty- a big plus in my book. Highly recommended!

Mac Medics was able to understand my problem and fix my computer much faster than I expected! I spent a week of frustration on the phone with Apple and even went it to an Apple Store but no one was able to help me. I walked in to Mac Medics, explained my problem and I was out of there in less than 15 minutes! I went in on a Monday and my Mac was returned to me on Friday – after being sent to Apple and getting the hard-drive recovered at Mac Medics. “I had a hardware issue with my IMAC with regards to the hard drive. When I took my IMAC to the Apple store, the hardware issue migrated to the white screen of death. I purchased a new IMAC and asked if it was possible to transfer data from the old hard drive. Unfortunately, the Apple personnel could not due to the issue with the hard drive. I searched the internet and stumbled upon MacMedics. I called them up and spoke to Chris who said they would look into seeing if they could retrieve the hard drive data. The good news was that it might be possible. I left them my new IMAC and my old hard drive and in less than a week they were able to retrieve all my data from the old hard drive and restore it on the new IMAC. I also brought in my daughter’s MacBook Pro and they replaced the old hard drive with a new solid state hard drive. Her Mac is now running efficiently. Pricing is very reasonable. Service is superb. Why would one want to go to any place other than MacMedics. If you want, you can ship your Mac to them and they will ship the repaired product back to you. Might sound corny, but thanks to a hard drive problem I found a place that is honest, responsible and and will only fix what is needed. I just returned from MacMedics on Benfield Blvd. My 2006 IMAC was not receiving e-mail and after trying unsuccessfully for days to solicit help from Verizon and Mac Support, I was at my wits end.
Long story short, I called at 10AM, made the 20 minute trek to MacMedics and was home with my beloved MAC in perfect working condition by 11:45AM. Sounds made up but it’s the truth.
The attendant (Chris) took over the repair process immediately and got right to the problem while explaining the mechanics of his repair. When I asked “how much?”, he said “it only took me 5 minutes so there is no charge”.
Needless to say, the customer service here is “off the charts”. These people are completely honest and extremely knowledgeable.
I have been considering upgrading to the new 27″ and when I do, I will be going to MacMedics rather than an Apple store.

One of the things that we’re famous for is taking care of older Macintosh hardware. In the case below, the client had a dead G4 iMac, and it was obviously beyond repair. She ended up making a visit to the Annapolis Apple Store, and it was too old for them to work on. So while cracking open a dead iMac is not super advanced “data recovery”, we still could do it, and we knew how to do perform that particular operation. This is where the 50,000 (Update 3/11/14: now over 65,000!) plus Mac service work orders we’ve logged since 1989 come into play. We just had full moon, and it seems like it brought a ton of new Data Recovery jobs into the MacMedics offices. Spooky!
Now that it’s Halloween, I offer you the perfect metaphor for your Mac’s (or iPhone’s) Back Up. Don’t play “Trick Or Treat” with your valuable data.
When we have clients show up at our Mac Lab with data we can’t recover it just breaks our hearts. We’ve got a great track record for Recovering AND Rescuing data for folks (Usually for just $399 w/ free 1TB Time Machine drive so you never lose your data again BTW), but there are cases we we can’t help with. We will refer these jobs off to Clean Room recovery firms, and often they can save your data in exchange for fees as high as $2500. But, not all data can be saved, and about 10% of the cases we refer, there’s not a positive result, and that data is gone forever.
As soon as you buy a new Mac, or get an old Mac’s hard drive repaired, you need to have a back up program running. On any Mac that is running Leopard (10.5) or Snow leopard (10.6), Lion (10.7), Mountain Lion (10.8), Mavericks (10.9), or Yosemite (10.10) use the built-in Time Machine! It’s very, VERY powerful, and has been used to save lots of our client’s data. Plus it’s the MOST POWERFUL feature that is BUILT IN to the Mac’s modern OS!
The important thing is to PLAN AHEAD. Your back up is not complete if it’s not:
1. Automatic (Use Time Machine and this point is covered)
2. Redundant (Double your back up with a clone of your data and this point is covered)
3. Off-Site (Take your double back up off-site or get Mozy and this point is covered)
See how easy it is to be 100% covered! Now think of how much better you’ll feel knowing this little project has been taken care of and that your back up has been certified! While all of us at MacMedics are HUGE fans of Time Machine, it’s not 100% infallible. MacMedics recommends that you ALSO back up your hard drive via a “clone” use Super Duper or Carbon Copy Cloner, as that way you can “test” your back up to insure you have a good, bootable copy. With a “clone” back up AND a Time Machine back up, you’re covered for TWO types of back ups, and you’re DOUBLING your chances for a successful recovery.
This might also be a good time to enhance your back up plan by adding an off-site back up. MacMedics hosts our own in-house CrashPlan backup server for your important data! So, if you want to expand into a cloud backup, we can help!
We had a client in with a bad MacBook hard drive just a few days ago, and she was mostly backed up, but she was working a major project for her employer that had huge amount of Excel data in it. All she wanted was that one folder. Sadly we could not get it for her. If she had set up Mozy, even if she did not have a back up drive *a common problem for portable computers), her data would have been “automatically” backed up AND “off-site” thus completing two points of the golden triangle of data protection. Best of all, it would have been 100% free!

Also, don’t forget that hard drives don’t last forever. Our rule of thumb for hard drive retirement is as follows. In Apple laptops the hard drive should be proactively replaced after 2 to 3 years years. In Apple desktops the hard drive should be proactive replaced after 3 years. There’s one more thing I would like to mention here. iPhones and iPod touch models also need to be backed up. All you have to do is to sync with you Mac from time to time. People are starting to treat these portable Apple products as stand alone devices, and when you think about it, many people are generating data on their iPhones and iPods just like they do on a computer.
You’ve got photos, e-mails, text documents, bookmarks, files, contacts, calendars, and videos that all can be generated or sent to your mobile device. All you have to do is connect to iTunes, and it will back up your device. Apple also has iCloud, which offers a PAID service that will allow you backup your entire iOS device to the cloud. This is however not automatic, and it IS something you have to pay for. Photos in My Photo Stream are saved on the iCloud server for 30 days. To save or back up these photos, you must copy them from My Photo Stream to your Camera Roll on your iOS device. You can then back up your Camera Roll using iCloud or iTunes.
There are not too many ways to get mission critical data off a dead iPhone. We can often do it, but the data is all stored on the logic board of your iPhone or iPod touch. If it gets wet, gets dropped, or gets lost or stolen, then there goes your data. If we can’t get your logic board to fire up, then we don’t have access to your data.
